Formula Two Racing Cars
In 2009 one of the most popular forms of motor sport was revived: the FIA Formula Two Championship. Like the race cars used in Formula one racing, Formula Two race cars are single seat, open wheeled vehicles. However, unlike Formula one which allows each team to construct a custom vehicle, every driver that participates in Formula Two receives an identical race car from FIA. From its inception, the purpose of the Formula Two series was to lower the cost of racing, thus creating an opportunity for upstart teams to break into Formula racing.
It should not be thought that Formula Two race cars are lacking in performance just because they are identical. Even with the cost limitations, FIA created a formidable race machine. The engine used for F2 vehicles is a turbo-charged 1.8 liter four-cylinder which produces 425 bhp. The driver will also have the option of using a feature called overboast—at the press of a button the amount of boast created by the turbo-charger increases, which drives the horsepower up to 480 bph, but only for six seconds.
The transmission of the F2 race car is a semi-automatic six speed. The transmission is called semi-automatic because the driver does not need to manually depress a clutch pedal before shifting gears, but the driver must still manually select gears by using small paddles located on the vehicle’s steering wheel.

The body design of the F2 race car is a compromise between aerodynamic down-force and handling. When creating the F2 car, designers sought to reduce the aerodynamic wake produced by the car because it creates unfavorable conditions for drivers following behind the lead car. By ensuring that the lead car received no aerodynamic advantage, FIA guaranteed that the race would change hands often—giving the audience a fast-paced and thrilling show every time. The Formula Two Championship is slated to return in 2010 for a second race season.
